Introduction: What Are Nightmares in Islam?
In Islamic belief, not all dreams are good or from Allah ﷻ. Some dreams, particularly nightmares or disturbing visions, are considered attacks from Shayṭān (Satan) intended to frighten or confuse the believer.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that bad dreams in Islam should be handled with wisdom, remembrance of Allah, and practical spiritual protection.
In this blog, we’ll explore:
• What nightmares mean in Islam
• Hadith references on nightmares
• How to protect yourself from bad dreams

What Do Nightmares Mean in Islam?
Are Nightmares from Allah?
No — nightmares are not from Allah. According to authentic Hadith, they are sent by Shayṭān to disturb and harm believers.
"The good dream is from Allah, and the bad dream is from Shayṭān."
— Sahih al-Bukhari (6984)

Prophetic Hadith on Nightmares
Islamic texts give very clear instructions on how to identify and handle nightmares.

1. Nightmares Are Shayṭānic
"If one of you sees a dream that he dislikes, let him spit to his left three times and seek refuge in Allah from Shayṭān..."
— Sahih Muslim (2261)
This shows nightmares are not meaningful, but instead tools of Shayṭān to instill fear, despair, or doubt.

2. Do Not Share a Nightmare
"If any of you sees what he dislikes, let him not mention it to anyone..."
— Sahih al-Bukhari
Islam discourages sharing nightmares to avoid giving power to something that has no divine origin or benefit.

3. Change Your Sleeping Position
"Let him turn to the other side..."
— Sahih Muslim
This simple but powerful advice breaks the psychological and spiritual effect of the nightmare.

Islamic Protection from Nightmares – Before You Sleep
Islam teaches preventive spiritual steps to protect yourself from nightmares, especially before sleeping.

1. Recite Ayat al-Kursi (Quran 2:255)
"Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi before sleeping, Allah will protect him and no Shayṭān will approach him till morning."
— Sahih al-Bukhari (2311)

2. Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas (3 Quls)
The Prophet ﷺ would blow on his hands and recite the 3 Quls every night before bed.
(Tirmidhi)

3. Make Wudu (Ablution) Before Sleeping
Sleeping in a state of purity brings barakah (blessing) and protection.

4. Say the Sleeping Du’a
"Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya."
("In Your Name, O Allah, I die and I live.")
— Sahih al-Bukhari

What Should You Do After a Nightmare?

Step Sunnah Action
1️⃣ Spit lightly over your left shoulder 3x
2️⃣ Say: "A‘ūdhu billāhi min ash-shayṭān ir-rajīm"
3️⃣ Don’t share the dream with anyone
4️⃣ Change sleeping position
5️⃣ Get up and pray if fear persists

Why Do People Get Nightmares? (Islamic Understanding)
Nightmares may occur due to:
• Lack of dhikr (remembrance) before bed
• Un-Islamic content seen during the day (TV, music, fear-based media)
• Shayṭān’s attempt to discourage or scare a person who is increasing in faith

What Not to Do After a Nightmare
• Don’t consult non-Islamic dream books
• Don’t assume it’s a sign or prediction
• Don’t make decisions based on it

Nightmares are not revelations. They are not to be feared, believed in, or interpreted.

Spiritual Comfort: Allah Protects His Servants
Nightmares may be scary, but Allah’s protection is stronger. The more you engage in dhikr, Qur’an, and purity of action, the less room Shayṭān has to influence your sleep or heart.
"Verily, the plotting of Shayṭān is weak."
— Quran 4:76
